ISTANBUL PAINTING AND SCULPTURE MUSEUM

After more than a decade, the new Istanbul Painting and Sculpture Museum opened in October 2022 with a project by Emre Arolat Architecture studio. The superimposition of the new function on the existing entrepot building of Sedad Hakkı Eldem gave a rise to a permeable and transitive public space located at the heart of the city to public use that was restricted since 1960. The new structure is in a visual dialogue with the context and the memory, the old and the new city. The 3-dimensional concrete grid of Eldem’s original building has been preserved with a rational yet fresh approach of spatial arrangement. Within this grid, the fragmental art galleries will provide a silent atmosphere for the visitors that, rather than disconnecting the perception from the outside world, will experience an unalloyed relationship with the art pieces.
